Icarus

Icarus is a personal project which combines my interest in concept art with my Industrial Design experience. The project was an experiment in implementing the Industrial Design process into a fictional world.

Although Icarus is entirely conceptual, in order to improve on my industrial design skills, I approached the process of creating Icarus as an industrial design project. By setting clear criteria for the mech’s design at the outset, I was able to more directly focus on the end result.

Design Criteria

Strength

Icarus needs to appear battle hardened and durable to support the mech’s story.

Human

An aesthetic that has human characteristics is visually compelling.

Flight

In order to narrow the scope of the project, Icarus’s main function is to deploy from the sky requiring features to support this ability.

Process

Digital Art

Digital paintings were used to solidify the world in which Icarus existed. This created a visual reference of the project goals for the following development stages.

3D Iteration

Conducted entirely in Blender, the 3d iteration stage accounted for the majority of the project. Over the course of three months, a multitude of aesthetics and details were considered to achieve a compelling identity for Icarus
